The adult Bible Study on Wednesday evenings is now focused on the book of Romans. Over the next several Wednesday nights, as the Lord leads, we intend to study through this great book verse by verse. We shall see that the message of the book is centered on the person of the Lord Jesus Christ. And, we will find that a great many questions about God and what He has given us in Jesus will be answered.

I hope you’ll make it a point to join us on Wednesdays at 7pm.

I. Of the Scriptures

We believe that every word of the original autographs (manuscripts) of the Scriptures was verbally inspired (breathed out) by God Himself; that the Scriptures are, therefore, the unique, absolute, authoritative standard of faith and practice, to be studied, proclaimed, obeyed, and defended; that they are to be interpreted literally, historically, and grammatically unless the context clearly indicates otherwise; that every portion is without exception profitable for doctrine and Christian growth; and that all the Scriptures, from first to last, center about our Lord Jesus Christ, in His person and work, in His first and second coming; and hence that no chapter even of the Old Testament is properly read or understood until it leads to Him; and moreover that all the Scriptures from first to last, including every chapter even of the Old Testament, were designed for our practical instruction

(Explanatory)

1. By “SCRIPTURES” we mean that collection of sixty-six books from Genesis to Revelation which, as originally written, does not only contain and convey the Word of God, but is the very Word of God.

2. By “INSPIRED” we mean that the books of the Bible were written by Holy Men of Old, as they were moved by the Holy Spirit, in such a definite way that their writings were supernaturally inspired and free from error, as no other writings have ever been or ever will be.
(Deuteronomy 6:6-9; Joshua 1:8; Psalms 19:7-11; Matthew 12:39-41; Luke 24:27-44; John 5:39, John 6:35, John 51:58, John 10:7, John 35; John 15:1, John 17:17; Acts 17:2-3; Acts 18:28; Acts 26:22-23; Rom. 15:4; 1 Corinthians 10:31, 1 Corinthians 14:37; II Timothy 3:16-17 ; II Peter 1:16, II Peter 19-21, II Peter 3:15-16 ; Jude 3-4; Revelation 22:18-19)

Independent Baptist churches (which may be referred to as Independent Fundamental Baptist, or IFB) are Christian churches holding to generally Baptist beliefs, but characterized by being independent from the authority of denominations and ecumenical conventions, although many Independent Baptist churches belong to fellowships. They remain autonomous and congregationalist in nature and are generally fundamentalist in teaching. The IFB movement is not a denomination per se although there are similarities. The term Independent Baptist was applied to these unaffiliated churches in the late 1800s and early 1900s when national Baptist denominations and conventions in the United States and England started modernising and, in the opinion of the now Independent Baptist churches, liberalising. Perceived weakening beliefs in these denominations about core Christian doctrines such as the infallibility of the Bible, the nature of God and Jesus, and separation from worldliness caused the more conservative local churches to react by separating from these denominations. Some joined new denominations that were more conservative in their beliefs while others did not join any particular denomination and remained “independent”. These local churches often set about establishing other Independent Baptist churches.

Make memorizing Scripture a regular habit. You can memorize Scripture easily. One way we say “I have it memorized” is “I know it by heart.” The writer of Psalm 119:11 used the same word, “heart,” to say where he kept God’s Word. The last part of that same verse tells one great value of memorizing Scripture.

Why bother to learn the exact words of a Scripture verse? Let us suggest four reasons:

It is easier to recall a verse word-for-word than some vaguely summarized form.

It is easier to meditate upon a verse when you can repeat it to yourself.

Verses you have memorized will help you and give you assurance when you are fighting temptation, when you are telling others about Chris, and when you are explaining what you believe.

Above all, the Lord of your life wants you to know His Holy Word.

Begin now - memorize one new verse each week through the end of the year. Here are a few verses to get you started:

Learning to Pray (Matthew 6:9-13)

A Basic Principle to Choose By (Romans 14:7-8)

Being in the Body (Ephesians 4:1-4)

Functioning in Love (1 Corinthians 13:1-13)
